“What?”, you say. Richard writing a post about Linux? How could this be. Has the evil Microsoft empire stopped paying Richard?
Well no. Microsoft still pays pays the berthing fee at the prime berth I got at the Berkely Marina after those silly (lisp) Sea Scouts were kicked out.
However what Microsoft didn’t do is write a frack’n (that ones for you Ted) driver for my DVD ROM Drive that works. Vista refuses to recognize a whole stack of DVD-RW blank media I have. FRACK FRACK FRACK!
So what does this have to do with Linux? Well what most people don’t know, don’t care to know or who are practicing how to be a grandmother in Arkansas is that Linux actually has better support for legacy hardware than Microsoft.
I think Microsoft is like the mafia. You try to run a nice little business and they come in and tell you need to do business with them. Sure they offer you a deal you can’t refuse but you know that if you use them then eventually you’ll have to start paying some protection money.
So apparently I now have to replace my brand new DVD ROM drive with one that the Microsoft Mafia says I can do business with or I can install Linux which I know (hope) will work.
BUT …. yeah there is always a but and this butt is Microsoft again. I can’t install Linux on my machine without some major techno geekery being employed. FRACK, FRAG and FRICK. I got the street smarts to do it but just when I get close I find some other stupid thing that makes me have to take ten steps more.
So let the Linux logs begin (again)!
IMO… buying a new (faster) $75 dvd-rw drive would be a lot simpler than wasting hours in front of a computer installing Linux just to use an older drive that you already have.
Perhaps this is a biased statement seeing as how I am a card carrying member of the mafia you spoke of, or perhaps it is just all the blue kool-aid I have consumed.
Either way, I know that your answer (as well as Lance’s) would be that it is the principle of the thing. That you already have a drive that would work with a different OS. And, good on ya for not wanting to consume more and all. Let me know when I can come over and laugh at you and your Linux box. 🙂
Oh, and btw, shouldn’t you be yelling at the DVD manufacturer for not making a Vista driver?
It is a Samsung drive. I don’t think speak Vista (or english).
